Abandoned Places

This is more just a call for you all to go look at a page: Abandoned Places In The World. It’s something I come back to, time and again, simply because it’s so evocative.

Would I go to any of these places? Well, no, probably not (although that abandoned island off the coast of Japan seems way cool, and as if people ought to have moved in). But … these places are evocative, somehow, in a way that the pretty places are not.

Why take pictures of just “the beautiful?” Why ignore what is all around us: the gritty, the lost, the abandoned, the forgotten?

True, I’m guilty of it: I have taken 860 pictures of flowers, alone! Yet, I’ve also taken 95 pictures of “abandoned furniture,” and 302 pictures of “what in the world?”

The flowers, though, and the castles, and whatever else, seem to overwhelm things, giving an imbalanced picture of the world.

Thoughts?

  1. I don’t think it represents an imbalance among your photos. I think you just have a higher proportion of the things that are around you daily. More flowers around you will put more in your photostream. Although, given what you have said about the amount of trash and abandoned items in Glasgow…the theory might be bunk. 😛

  2. Admittedly it kind of bugs me that there are pictures of ugliness — I tend to walk around and try to shut out the things that I don’t want to see.

    D. is much more of a realist.

I don’t know what that says about me.

  3. I’ve gotten better at ignoring the ugliness, and don’t even really notice myself avoiding mess on the sidewalk. I just can’t resist the festering piles of furniture, though I’ve started to pass them by.

  4. I posted 8 random photos at my blog. I really need to find my 2009 files, what I was looking for I couldn’t find. Yes, yes I need more tags, file names… organization. One day, one day…

  5. I have way more photos of flowers than of anything else…even more than of food…especially this spring since we had lots of rain and volunteer flowers. I also like to take photos of graffiti if it is really arty….also rusted things.
Love the photos of guest room, especially the seedhead and dragonfly painting…very restful and fun.
