It’s been a very long while since we’ve done a post “In Retrospect.” Looking back through the pictures taken on November 13, we find … Glasgow.
It’s so strange, having spent 5 years there, to be back in California. It’s particularly strange because most of the photographic documentation we have from our lives comes from being forced to adapt to digital photography. When we got to Scotland, developing film was just so expensive that we didn’t take many pictures, and ended up moving to digital within about 4 months. So, our memories are largely slanted towards what we can see, rather than what we must have been doing in our lives before Scotland.
We both still miss being there, in so many ways, but it’s only made more acute by looking in on “a day” from the past and seeing pictures which don’t include any of that previous history. What were we doing, before this day in 2007? We must have done something, but those records are on paper, packed in a box somewhere, inaccessible to us at the moment (having no bookcases means that the journals are still in boxes).
We can look back at the blog history, and the email, to see that we were preparing for Thanksgivings by baking all sorts of things, but the photographic evidence is somehow more impactive than having to dig through email and blogs to find out what we were doing, back then.

Just finished a quick scroll through my blog a year ago and was shocked. I had just moved to Bainbridge and had NO clue that within one year, I’d be living in Texas.
The tides of life are indeed bizarre–in both blessing and angst.

Living in Texas … yeah, couldn’t have predicted that one. Wow, what a change from the Pacific Northwest!
No bookcases? Trip to IKEA? I’ll drive!
HATE Ikea. But they may be the best option, frankly. We had 5 Billy Bookcases, and they were double-stacked when we packed to leave. We’re going to need some significant shelf-space, to accommodate not only those 5 (er … 10) Billy Bookcases, but the two other bookcases we’d had.
I’m thinking: cinder-blocks and boards.
Cinder blocks and boards in earthquake country? Let’s try finding free bookcases that can be anchored to the walls. May have some here at work.
My blog shows I was recovering from a two-week road trip through New England last year about this time (which was wonderful, by the way), and my photo library that I was experimenting with an apple squash recipe which was not blogworthy, and dog sitting for relatives (I will NEVER do that again). I’ll confess I love IKEA — I have a wall of Billy bookcases behind me right now… 😀
And not to sound like an old record… but you look back and wonder, was it that long ago? Seems like yesterday. Maybe the earth is spinning faster.
