This picture was taken on Saturday, at around 4:00 p.m. This is what Glasgow is like in the afternoon, now that the sun is going down so early. We are so looking forward to the extra two hours of sunshine we’ll get while we’re in California (and T. is rubbing it in that she’ll probably get the best tan, and that D. will probably need to bring along his sunscreen, particularly since there’s no part of him which isn’t “fish-belly white”).
We’ve been going around, gathering small gifts for friends, and thinking of just what we’ll do while we’re away. It’s a strange thing to be leaving here again, particularly in light of how we felt coming back here last time. Home is California, where our families are … except that home is also here, where we hole up in our little hobbit-home and read and write. It will be nice when, someday, both homes are within easy reach of the other!
We’re approaching this new year with a bit of resolve: we need to get out and actually see Scotland. We’ve been living in Glasgow for a year and a half, and have only been in other parts of Scotland for a few weeks. This must change, in the new year. We need to take a break, to look up, to visit the Highlands and Islands.
D. has given his camera a thorough service (taking everything apart, cleaning all of the surfaces with ethyl alcohol to remove the grease of Glasgow). He’s ready to take a few thousand pictures of the sunshine, the people, and the warmth. We can’t bring it with us, we know, but we can use it to remember. A few days from now will find us on a plane, arriving at San Francisco International Airport.

I’m also returning to the US in a few days for Christmas, though sadly I won’t be getting much more sunshine in New York. Enjoy your trip!
Better pack the long undies and the gloves – we’re freezin’ here! It appears as though the weather didn’t read your last post to cooperate. You can sunbathe if you wish, but you’ll lose some parts to frostbite.
Have a wonderful trip. So sad we won’t be there to see you. We’ll be off to find some snow in Colorado. Oh, and please tell me you will go to Italy just once before you move away from there…
I love all your pictures D. Great work!
Nie picture!
Happy christmas!
