News from Glasgow

The first picture, here, was taken on September 25, and the second on December 18. They’re both pretty much the same view: what D. sees as he’s waiting for the bus to arrive. Just to the left, beneath the building, is actually an overpass of the M-8.

We bring this up because we heard from a friend that they had to close this particular underpass for a half hour, last week, because it was as cold as ice! Yes, indeed, folks: it’s icy back in Glasgow. Aren’t we glad to be in sunny California? The headline, last Tuesday, was

“in Glasgow, the M8 is about to be closed westbound at Charing Cross to remove giant icicles hanging from the underpass.”

Giant. Icicles.

Perhaps we should be hoping that our visas don’t come through, and that we have to hang out in the sunshine, mooching from friends and relatives for a while longer? (We’re suddenly wondering how our newest expatriate friends from Southern California are faring…)

D. received an email on December 30 (finally!) from the UK Consulate:

“We are currently working with a backlog of 5 working days mail due to the high volume of mail received at this time of mail (please note that we were closed from 24 December until 29 December). This is why you have yet to receive an e-mail regarding receipt of your package. Nevertheless, we still aim to process all applications within 5-15 working days of receipt in this office.”

This is as a result of harassing the WorldBridge people enough to get them to send an email to their overlords employers at the Foreign Commonwealth Office. D. replied to this email within an hour of its being sent, and has heard nothing further. He’s also called our local Representative’s office and left a message. We figure that, come Monday, things will start to come together, and we’ll have a better idea of how things will work out.

Until we know more, we’re both just trying to get as much of our work done as we can. We are each able to work, provided we have our computers (and we do), and since we don’t have any pets to feed, nor plants to water back in Glasgow, we’re just … getting on with our regular lives, with a few more social intereactions. It’s not as if we really do anything in Glasgow anyway, except inhabit a house and attend choral society rehearsals. Which is rather strange, thinking about it, but that’s why this is the blog of the Hobbits: we’re simply in a different Hobbit-Hole for a while.

Maybe we should get out more…!

Happy Weekend!

  1. Giant icicles?! Wow. You guys do seem to live in another world. I hope the papers go through correctly and that you do get to return to icy Glasgow. Enjoy Cali!

  2. Good luck on getting (or not getting ;-)) your visas on time.
And I’ll send you pictures of giant icicles in a couple of weeks. They need to grow a bit more before they reach Giant stage.
