Still Moving

Well, friends, the chaos of packing to move begins again this weekend. We have found a flat and put down a deposit, and are just waiting to sign the final papers (and hand over that last chunk of cash). That should take place in two weeks, and we should be moved into our (empty) flat just in time for Easter! Somewhere in there we’ll find time to visit Ikea, to purchase a bed. We’ll see where it goes from there, but we’re going to be adding furniture very slowly, not just because we don’t want to spend the money, but because we’re so happy to have an empty place! We’ve been living with other people’s idea of what furniture ought to be, now, for a year and a half, and our taste is definitely NOT on the monster-sized leather-couch scale.

We’ve been looking back over previous March pictures, and are rather amazed at how many pictures we don’t have, from past years. The ones we do, though, we remember with fondness. Shown here are D flying a kite, on Sonoma’s Doran Beach; our first “real” garden, in Santa Rosa; remodeling our kitchen at the condo in Benicia; the celebration of B’s arrival with the bag of pinto beans; and sticky buns, baked in this flat, the converted church.

We’re faced with the fact that, while we think of ourselves as Hobbits – who stay in one place, enjoying simple pleasures – we do move around quite a lot. There have been some notable exceptions, in there – we stayed in Santa Rosa for nearly 4 years, and then in Benicia for another three and a half. We suppose, though, that we’ll have to keep on finding new Hobbit holes for a while more yet. We’re hoping to stay at this next place for the next two years, and then for D. to find a teaching or research job and to truly put down some roots again. Perhaps, by that time, the world will have turned itself around a bit, and be back to something approximating “normal.” Here’s hoping.

  1. Lovely that you were able to document all of your moves. It leaves a little something to remember each “hobbit hole” by. Wonderful pictures!

  2. Mmmmm…pintos!

Hope you enjoy your empty space…revel in it…and when things come, they are what you feel cozy with!

Hope the move goes off without a hitch.
