1999 France 018

Ten years ago, we took our first European Vacation: we visited our friends N and K, who were living in Holland, and another friend who was living in Germany. We have been back through Holland a few times, but only to spend time at KLM Airlines’ home airport, Schiphol. We’ve always said that we’d go back, visit a few of the places we missed, cycle around (Amsterdam has separate lanes for their bicycles), and spend more than 4 days there!

Are we planning a trip? No, not really. But we realized, the other day, that our time here is halfway over. Where have we gone? Well, we’ve been to Estonia, and to Italy. And to a few places in Scotland. But we asked each other, “What would you regret not having done, when we leave here?” The answer is that we’ll regret not having traveled more.

So, as D wraps up his first chapter (20,000 words), and plans for next year, we’re also planning to take a few more vacations. We might even break down and fly RyanAir, or EasyJet, if we can figure out the best way to do so. We’ll take day trips, carrying our cameras and little else.

We’ll take weekend trips, as we can. D is pushing his work to send him to some more of their regional offices. D’s boss asked him today if he’d like to spend 6 weeks in Tallinn, but lamented the cutting of the travel budget when D said “Yes!” But, we’re still hoping to work in a trip to Bulgaria or Romania, on the company dime. We’ll see what we can pull off.

Another thing D thinks he’ll regret is not taking enough pictures. Yep: our Flickr account holds 15,817 pictures, as of today, and D wishes he’d taken more. T just rolls her eyes.

  1. So close and yet so far… It's the same with us, making "excuses" and putting the travel off. Then time slips by too fast. Enjoy your traveling.

And T, you can never have too many pictures!!! 🙂

  2. Some people I'll admit, can have too many pictures. But you D – from what I've seen – can NEVER have too many pictures! Just like you can never travel to too many places.

  3. I always regret not travelling more while I've been here, despite the fact that I've travelled a fair bit. I'm hoping to get in at least one more mini-break this year before Christmas.

You see, this is why I don't have nice things. All my money goes to trains, flights and B&Bs.

  4. Katie, we've realized we've put the wrong emphasis on things — not enough dough spent on tickets and B&B's, by far. Definitely time for a shift in priorities!

  5. Both airlines are rubbish but EasyJet is a little less so than Ryan, but just by a hair. Plus with both unless you are a holder of an EU passport you can't do the 'free online check-in' so all us expats have to pay extra right off the bat – grrrr!

  6. My how time flies. It seems just yesterday we were walking along canals by fields of tulpen. I only wish my camera back then had been digital. Time for a visit to ye ole kaas maker or keuken hof?
