Internet World

Because, people, I found myself taking pictures of food prep, for a dish which is essentially just potatoes & turnips au gratin. And, well, it makes you think … does anybody really care that you can slice up potatoes & a swede & some turnips, bodge some cheese & yogurt in there, along with some spices, chuck it all in the oven for a while, and you’ve got some food? Yes, it tastes good, and it’s kind of interesting that there’s a difference between a turnip and a swede, but only if you hold the things next to each other. Other than that, one’s bigger, maybe, but who knows if that’s just happenstance?

After popping that dish into the oven, we sat down to watch Pan’s Labyrinth. We turned it off after about 15 minutes, having skipped around a bit, but basically just in disgust. That’s kind of rained on the whole morning, because we thought that we’d take a morning to watch a movie – something nice & sociable, something kind of along the lines of a break from the constant drive which has both of us writing or reading all of the time, even to the extent that we get up in the middle of reading to write something. Well, Pan’s Labyrinth is a miserable, violent, disgusting waste of energy / time / film / effort / money / life. I’m so utterly disgusted at the completely horrendous violence forced upon me – yes, forced, because I wasn’t expecting anything like that out of what I thought to be a fairy tale – that I’ve been casting about, looking for some means of purging it from my mind.

Perhaps later this evening I’ll be of a mind to do some baking. Now, though, I’m going to go take a shower & try to re-start the day.

  1. I find almost all recipes interesting, especially the simple ones! The reason; even though you’ve used simple ingredients I certainly hadn’t thought to mix those certain ingredients together to come up with the dish 🙂 And Lord knows after the amount of meals I’ve cooked it’s nice to see a new one every once in awhile that doesn’t use some exotic ingredient that I have to fly to Japan to find LOL. This reminds me of when I tasted my Aunt’s recipe… I never thought that chili sauce and grape jelly would be an excellent sauce over meatballs, two simple ingredients!

  2. Sometimes simple recipes like that are the most useful as many people struggle to work out how to eat all those vegs we are meant to be eating.

In my experience swede and turnip taste noticeably different though there is a bit of a sliding scale, swede tends to be sweeter.

  3. I enjoy the recipes, too. Please keep them coming. As an aspiring cook, not yet able to come up with easy, simple recipes, I appreciate your insight!

Pan’s Labyrinth is definitely not what one expects. It took me a couple tries to get through it as well.

I hope the weekend was salvaged and enjoyable.

  4. Thank you all! I was just feeling … well, grumpy. It’s like when one buys a beautiful looking watermelon & brings it home only to find out that it’s mealy inside. The fact that I’d been saving this particular one up for a while … well, didn’t help.

The weekend was salvaged, to the tune of four loaves of bread baked on Sunday, after a good morning with the Church of Scotland. 1 Olive loaf, 2 Ginger-Raisin loaves, and 1 Plain loaf. So, yes – much improved. We may not get thinner, but I’m certainly happier. 🙂

  5. Yep…I agree..Labyrinth was a bummer. I was expecting several unusual creatures as some doll making buddies had said there was a ton of inspiration in the film for us … HUH? Where they watching the same movie?

I love recipes … anything and everything…. sometimes I just read them; sometimes it is “take-and-bake it”

Oh, yum…. saved by bread! What could be better than a houseful of fresh bread aroma …?? nothing that’s what!!
