Wee Technology Rant

This is just a wee shout-out to the idiot savants over at Microsoft: next time you roll out a security patch, don’t change my firewall to block out my Pocket PC! I’m just saying: I have a Windows computer, which talks to a Windows Pocket PC, via a USB cable. It plugs into one, and into the other. Why should the firewall think there’s anything wrong with that, and block the connection? What, somebody’s going to walk up, log in as me, establish a security account between the two devices, and give me a virus? I somehow don’t think so.

I just wanted to be able to do a wee bit of reading on my little computer this evening, instead of hunkering down at my desk or pinning myself underneath my laptop “desktop replacement” (full-sized keyboard with number pad, 19″ monitor = not a laptop any more). Instead, I’m sitting here, hammering away at my silly computer, trying to figure out why it won’t connect. Now? Now that I’ve fixed the problem I get to wait for the device to synchronize, which will take a while because in the process I’ve deleted the security connection between it and my computer … so there are now 1037 items to sync.

It’s still not enough to make me convert to Mac, though. I’m just sayin.

  1. Being a technological ignoramus, I understood barely a word of this. But being a technological ignoramus, I totally understand your frustration. It’s all just TOO hard.

I hope it all works out.

  2. KJ: I’ve got a Master’s in Information Systems … and it’s still annoying, painful, and hard.

divatobe: Glad you noticed. It’s not just for you, you know, but for some others as well. 😉 Like your new profile pic, by the way.

  3. Just like global ‘terrorism’, some actually exists, but the security measures taken for computer baddies and international baddies sometimes is worse than the actual threat. I have lots of patience with many things (although less each year it seems), but hardly any with computers…which require a lot of patience it seems. Hope yours synced and you are now having fun.

  4. I’m sorry but I’m laughing, not AT you but with you because I know how frustrating updates from MS can be! Have you tried installing the new service pack for Vista yet?? Unbearable… and still not in on my end even though I have done EVERYTHING MS and every flippin’ forum I can find suggests! 🙂
Usually by the time I hear something like this the person has phoned me (I am on way too many people’s speed dial for techy help), is in tears and is one step away from throwing a hammer through their computer screen… my first words are “calm down” and then “what did you do?” Then there’s the “I’m not going to help you until you calm down” speech LOL
