I managed to catch our delivery guy, this morning, as he was just arriving. That box he’s carrying is what forces us to eat our veggies, and is delivered every week. This week it contains: 2 Kohlrabi, 1 head of cauliflower, 1 head of broccoli, 4 carrots, 1 bag of mushrooms, 2 onions, 2 beets, 2 zucchini (a.k.a courgettes), 2 tomatoes, 1 box bean-sprouts, 2 bananas, 2 oranges, 2 apples, and 1 pear.
The kohlrabi usually gets chiffonaded and eaten with a spicy dressing. The cauliflower usually gets turned into a soup of some sort (this week might be something along the lines of Annemarie’s soup). The broccoli and bean sprouts get included in a stir-fry, as do the carrots and zucchini. The beets will be baked, and may be turned into a salad of some sort, as well.
We say that having a box makes us be creative about using veggies. In reality … it just means that they’re incorporated into our diet. It’s a good thing, even if it contributes to our culinary laziness.
Isn’t it just great having the veggies delivered to your place? I love having my CSA share delivered! Have fun with the mushrooms!
At least your dishes sound pretty healthy. My sis did the CSA box and began every recipe by figuring out how to add cheese, sour cream, or whipping cream to the recipe…really! Not surprisingly she didn’t lose weight and complained that eating veggies made her fat. The reason given was that there was nothing ‘interesting’ to make with the veggies except the way she did them. Your kind of ‘culinary laziness’ can be a good thing.
How do you recycle the box the vegies come in?
Jes: We can never get enough mushrooms!
Elle: We try to be healthy about veggies – that’s part of why we have the box! Of course, if you noticed the recipe for cauliflower au gratin, you’ll know that we splurge on a high-calorie dish every now and again, too.
Pene: He picks the box up the following week, so it just sits in our house until then.
I am NOT even going to tell you how jealous we are. We used to get a box delivered when we lived in NYC, and it was lovely. We were forced to eat things we would not ordinarily buy, left to our own devices.
We can’t get that here, we could take a share, but we do have a fab farmer’s market, so we’ve been going every week. We just don’t tend to buy the things we used to get delivered…
Sigh.
I think my fav veggie lately has been bean sprouts, I just can’t seem to get enough of them 🙂
