Lost in Translation


Just a brief note, to let you all know: cooking isn’t the same, from country to country. This evening’s example: “Swiss Cheese.” It doesn’t exist, in the UK. Probably doesn’t exist in all of Europe. Why? Well, because what an American thinks of as “Swiss Cheese” is known as “Emmental” or “Emmentaler,” here in the UK (and the rest of Europe). Why? Well, I’m guessing that the Swiss … have more than just one kind of cheese that they make. Radical concept, I know. It’s just one more thing, though, that throws a wrench (or, you know, if you’re from the UK, “a spanner”) into the works of cooking.

  1. Another thing that doesn't exist: graham crackers. I made a cheesecake on Sunday and couldn't find any! Had to settle on digistive "biscuits".

    Oh, and coriander is cilantro!

    Jennifer: Oooh, I'd forgotten about "digestive biscuits." We did a cheesecake and had to resort to the same thing. Bleh!

    At least, though, the coriander cilantro thing kinda makes sense … from a gardening perspective. I mean, if you plant Coriander Seeds, in the US you get Cilantro, in the UK you get Coriander. 😉

  3. So true. Car park brings to mind autos riding on a merry go round and the ferris wheel and a roller coaster, not a place to park your car…isn't that a parking lot? Not in Ireland where a car park is the place to park the car. Bet there are dozens of similar items.
