Prescription Fees?

We got a message in “the post” the other day, telling us that we’ll have to fork out for our prescription medicine. What a horrible thing, I tell you: £38 (about $55 USD) will cover our prescription charges for the next year. Think about that for a minute. Now, think about the free medical care we receive here, because we’re students, and would also receive if we were residents.

Yes, we’re rubbing it in a bit. It’s sure nice not to worry about things like this, isn’t it? Oh, wait – you’re worrying? Yeah, so did we. Here’s to better cheaper healthcare for our friends and family in the U.S., soon.

It’s cheaper to pay for a PhD (and get free medical care) than it would be to buy medical care alone, in the U.S. Sure, some of it’s not all shiny and up-to-the-minute like it is in the U.S., but it’s available, which is a far cry better than it could be (and is, for most). Just sayin.

  1. There's some tunnel vision going on here in the good ole' USA regarding medical care, not to mention the propaganda. Nice to hear a broader perspective. Just wish there was a broader audience to hear it.
Enjoy it while you can. I miss Europe.

  2. If you take a medication regularly, the £5 per month would add up to £60 per year. By paying them the fee up-front, you get all the medications you can use for the flat fee. So, if you have an incidental medication on top of your regular one, that's free.

  3. Not to mention lots of people here (including me!) don't have to pay AT ALL for even prescriptions! (Anyone whose had certain medical conditions/risks)
And they are on track for no one to have to pay by like 2012 or something.
    Yay free medical care!
