No Fly Tipping

A few months ago, on his way to class, D stopped to take a picture of a veritable mountain of rubbish. As he was framing the shot, a lady walked out of the building and cheered him on. Well, it turns out that she’s involved with a local newspaper,

and would like to use some of D’s pictures to advertise a public meeting being held by our local council (the meeting, of course, is about the rubbish problem in our area).

Click one of the pictures, there, to see a slideshow of the various bits of abandoned furniture we’ve encountered on our wanderings about the neighborhood. If you click the “show info” link at the top of the slideshow you’ll get brief descriptions, as well. They’re not the pictures we’d hoped would do well … but at least somebody’s making use of them. And, really … they are a bit of what Glasgow is like.

  1. Funny, that. I mean, I’ve a picture of the same futon mattress, sitting in the sidewalk for over a month! It’s … just amazing. The fact that the regular trash service wouldn’t even pick it up, when I know for a fact that they had to walk past it at least a dozen times, is just … bizarre. Truly.

  2. So many pictures! Can you imagine how heavy those upholstered items are after sitting in rain for a month? Not to mention the breeding ground for germs and such.

  3. Whoever thinks they’ve got a littering problem where they are really should go visit the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. They’ve got the prize all sewn up; Glaswegians may try, but next to Cypriot Turks, they’ve got catching up to do.

I’ve always loved that ‘No Fly Tipping’, though. I can still see the disappointed little waiter flies, tiny white aprons tied around their stubby, hairy waists.

  4. Good Lord what’s with all the mattresses?? And the blue leather loveseat… heck it looks in better shape (much better shape) than the couch I have! lol These people really should join Freecycle!
PS Your pictures (although of garbage) are excellent, as usual 🙂

  5. Mary: Yep – that’s exactly why I first took a picture of this sign! I couldn’t imagine, actually, why anyone would even try to tip a fly (as they’re rumored to do with cows, in the Midwest).
Kans: That’s why I kept taking these pictures. I mean, really, there are some pieces of furniture in here that I would be happy to have in the house … or would have, before they’d been soaked and abused!
